The job:

Occupational therapist at Culpeper Regional Hospital in Culpeper, Va., which in mid-2007 opened two new facilities — Madison Physical Therapy and Rehab, and Powell Wellness Center — to better serve outpatients requiring physical,
occupational, and speech therapy.

Why this is a dream job:

Therapists work in state-of-the-art facilities that maximize their ability to help patients and motivate patients to help themselves. For example, the Powell Wellness Center is home to the Therapeutic Unique Rehabilitative Two-Temperature Lap and Exercise pool, better known as TURTTLE. The staff is a collaborative, experienced team dedicated to customized personal care.

Types of patients and injuries you would work with:

Culpeper OTs treat a wide array of patients, including those with postsurgical issues, orthopedic injuries, neurological disorders, and lymphedema. Special programs exist for children with physical and developmental delays. OTs also evaluate patients’ home and/or job environments to reduce hazards and increase independence and productivity.

Word on the street — what your colleague has to say about this employer:

“Culpeper Regional Hospital has a supportive and collaborative atmosphere. It also supports [therapists’] professional growth and interests,” says Cheri Chadduck, OT.

What you could do for fun if you lived here:

Culpeper is rich in Revolutionary and Civil War stories and points of interest, which history buffs are sure to appreciate. The town flourishes within the Piedmont River Valley and is known for picturesque wineries, orchards, and farms, and exciting outdoor activities such as fishing, boating, hiking, camping, horseback riding, and golfing. Additionally, Culpeper is just 40 miles from bustling Charlottesville, Va., and 75 miles from Washington, D.C.

What you would be paid:

Salary starts at $63,856 and is commensurate with experience. Benefits include health and dental insurance, short- and long-term disability, tuition assistance, and more.
